Heacham First School pupils form walking bus in 2002
In our weekly Schooldays Memories feature we look back at a walking bus in September 2002…
Traffic stopped and passers-by waved as a crocodile of Heacham’s youngest residents, led by several responsible adults, trotted to school in bright high-visibility jackets, in September 2002.
The children from Heacham First School are pictured having arrived safely at school on completion of the first walking bus which was due to continue to and from the school gate every Tuesday and Thursday.
Sandy Reid, West Norfolk area road safety officer, said it was part of the Safer and Healthier Journeys to School initiative, which tried to get more children to make their own way to school either by foot or by bike.
