Terrier sketch part of dog celebration at King’s Lynn Museum
In our fortnightly Picture This column, museum curator Dayna Woolbright previews a new exhibition…
Lynn artist Henry Baines (1823-1894) was known for his oil paintings depicting life in the town in the 19th century, including sailing ships, the fishing fleet and views of the town.
He also dedicated many hours of study to the natural world, sketching plants and flowers, pastoral landscapes, and domestic and farm animals.
Through a diverse collection of objects and artworks, the exhibition explores the different roles dogs have played in our lives – as working animals and loyal companions.
Drawing on Norfolk Museums Service’s extensive collections, alongside significant loans, the exhibition will feature natural history, archaeology, and artworks of both local and national importance – including works by famous artists Sir Edwin Landseer, Andy Warhol and David Hockney.
Admission to the museum, including the exhibition, is free from October 2024 to March 2025. The exhibition runs to June 29, 2025.
